Elephants

In January of 2007 I photographed elephants at the Royal Elephant Kraal just outside of Bangkok.  Now an elephant sanctuary, the Royal Elephant Kraal has a history going back 800 years.  For centuries elephants were trained here including training for warfare.  Now one can schedule time here to spend with the elephants including taking an active hand in the daily care of these majestic animals.

This series of elephant images are my favorite of all the images I have done…and I can’t look at any of these photos without feeling a surge of affection for elephants.

A few interesting elephant facts:

Elephants live to the age of seventy or greater and continue to reproduce until about the age of fifty.

An elephant’s trunk has over 100,000 muscles!

Elephants do have incredible memories…and also cry, play and laugh.

Some elephants grow to be 13 feet tall and can weigh up to fourteen thousand pounds!

They can run up to 24 mph for short distances.

An elephant can turn the page of a book or pluck a single blade of grass with it’s trunk.

Elephants have similar personality traits to humans…and elephants who have been orphaned at an early age and reared by humans have become “spoiled”, thrown tantrums, become depressed, play tricks and behave with the variety of human children.

I always get a special thrill from being close to or touching one of these huge animals…and when I look into their eyes I sense that they are indeed the noblest of creatures.
