Funny cat pictures

Smash down! This funny cat picture parodies two cats engaged in Big Time Wrestling complete with uniforms and a crowd composed entirely of cats. This complex image was created for use as a humorous poster and since that time has been a greeting card, in several calendars, printed on coffee mugs and even apparel!

It has been one of my most successful funny pet pictures. To do the image we first built a miniature wrestling ring about two feet by two feet in size. The wrestling ring was built by my art director, Collette Kulak. She also created costumes for the cats, costumes that we could actually fit on the cats.

Use professional animal trainer

One reason that we always use professional cats and animal trainers is so that we can know which cats will tolerate wearing costumes and being handled, and which ones won’t. Obviously these two cats were pretty laid back animals and handled the whole shoot with aplomb.

This image was one of the hardest and most complex I have ever done. Originally we had not planned on having an audience but thought we would have the area outside the ring just go black. Instead, I got the bright idea of creating an audience out of cats. I had a number of “head shots” of cats that I had shot over the years. I pulled them all out and scanned the appropriate ones (this image was created before digital capture).

I hadn’t counted on the difficulty of making twenty cats look like two hundred. As I began to place them in position I would occasionally have to adjust one to make the size match better, or move another one because it would be too close to another location in which I was using the same cat’s face…but each time I would adjust the positioning of one a chain effect would be created in which I would have to make small adjustments of the cats around them.

It quickly became a nightmare process with every adjustment requiring two more adjustments! Anyway, to put an image like this together we shoot the set (in this case the wrestling ring), the props, held in a variety of positions, the cats separately and wearing the costumes, and each position of each cat’s paws, legs, head and body.

There is nothing worse than sitting down at the computer and starting to work, then, halfway through, realizing that you don’t have all the parts you need to complete the image! To prevent that scenario we overshoot, try and cover all of our bases…just as a safety precaution.

The details make all the difference in shooting Stock Photos

While shooting we have to pay attention to lighting, angles and every little detail. The shooting took a day. Before we actually start capturing images the cats have to be groomed, their claws trimmed, their eyes cleaned. Some of that can be done afterwards in Photoshop but we have found it is better to do as much as we can during the shoot.

After the shoot it would take as much as half-a-day to edit the film and choose which images to incorporate into the final composite. It took me eight days of imaging to complete the composite work.

That is the most time I have ever spent on a single image. Keep in mind that back then, in the days of Apple Quadras, computers were much slower and the imaging software not nearly as advanced. I am sure I could do the image today in a quarter of the time and do it better as well. On the other hand…I might not suggest creating an audience of cat faces either!
