This lol funny Basset hound nurses a hangover and holds a cup of steaming coffee as he stands in his kitchen. The poor dog looks awful! His eyes are bloodshot, his eyelids at half-mast and his mouth droops. You can feel his pain! This image was created as a birthday greeting card as part of John Lund's Animal Antics series of humorous pet pictures. This Basset Hound is named Matilda (OK...I guess it is a she rather than a he...). I particularly enjoy working with, photographing, and digitally enhancing Basset Hounds. They have really expressive faces.

How to Take Funny Pictures of Your Pets

When we take funny pictures of pets we begin with a layout or drawing to make sure we get each part of the animal in the position and lighting that we will need to create our image. When shooting your own pet the same main ingredient for successful photography in required that is needed from us: Patience! A couple of tips for great pet photography: First, get down on your pet's level. By getting down on their level we are increasing the intimacy and connection...and providing a perspective that is inherently interesting as it is not the perspective we are used to. Secondly, get the eyes sharp. If the eyes are sharp it almost doesn't matter if the rest of your dog or cat are a little soft. Third, get your pet looking into the lens. Again, that increases the connection a viewer has with the animal.

Creating funny dog and cat photos for the Animal Antics collection.

In this particular photograph the background is a kitchen I photographed on the fortieth floor of an upscale apartment building in Buenos Aires. I was doing a stock shoot and rented the apartment for three days at $600.00 a night...well worth it! The dog and coffee cup I shot in my Sausalito studio. the steam from the coffee I added in Photoshop. Photoshop is a great enhancement tool for turning ordinary pet pictures in to special ones...particularly in the case where humor is what you are after!
