Shooting Slow Motion Video For Stock and Motion Clips

Shooting with the Phantom HD camera, despite the many warnings we had heard, turned out to be a snap. That was due in great part to the GVS9000 2XU 444 VTR. The GVS hardware/software solution allowed us to review our footage only moments after the capture, while it converted the files and color corrected them on-the-fly. The massive RAID storage proved more than ample for our storage needs despite the data-hungry nature of the Phantom HD camera. The camera captures data in approximately five second bursts at 32 gigabytes each burst! Shooting at 1000 frames per second also requires a lot of light. We lit this clip with a total of six 2000 watt tungsten lights, four mounted in a custom built softbox, and two aimed from behind to add the depth and sparkle to the water. We filmed in David Fischer's San Francisco studio. At the end of each day we had created quite a mess! Water all over the place, broken glass (for the wine glass breaking clips), a tangle of extension cords and all the normal debris of a professional photo shoot. We shot for three weeks and it was definitely the most fun I have ever had on a shoot anywhere near approaching that length of time!
