A man lays in a hospital bed in a recovery room in this funny (sort of) picture and concept stock photo. He has both one arm and one leg in traction and his head is tightly wrapped in bandages. Only his toes, fingers, nose and eyes are visible outside of the bandaging. He is also connected to a drip IV. He is also alone and isolated.

Creating Funny Stock Pictures With Photoshop

To create this humorous picture of a man in a body cast, my associate, Stephanie Roeser, used pipe insulation, balloons, bubble wrap, gauze and cast material to create a replica of a man so situated. We photographed the mock-up in a hospital bed in the recovery room of a surgery center. I then lay down in the same position (we had the camera on a tripod) and was photographed. I used Photoshop to isolate my fingers, toes and head and then composited them together with the mocked-up patient.

This image can be used for many different kinds of advertisements, promotions and editorial uses. The image is a rich metaphor for helplessness, dependency, disaster and calamity. This stock image can be used to symbolize everything from a dysfunctional medical system to the need for insurance. One thing that makes this image especially effective is that it is an image we all have in our heads even though the reality does not exist. We have all seen cartoons of this archetypal image and willingly buy into it when see such a photograph.
