In an age when the accumulated knowledge is overwhelming, and access to that information is unprecedented, creativity is what will set apart one product from another, one service from another, and one company from another. The most important quality to cultivate in employees is creativity. The most important trait to enhance in ourselves is our creativity...our ability to come up with new and relevant ideas. Societies, companies and organizations that do not foster ideas and creative efforts will fall further and further behind.
As photographers it is particularly important to exercise our creative juices. In an age where literally billions of images are available, far more than any one human could hope to see in one lifetime, the task before us is twofold. First, we must create photographs that are creative, that have a strong, clear message applicable to our marketplace; and secondly, we must get those images in front of prospective users. Both tasks are essential for our success as photographers and as business people. Make no mistake, we are just as much small business people as any of those who use our images to promote themselves, their products, and their services.
Our creativity must extend beyond, far beyond, the simple task of making pictures or illustrations. We must exercise our creativity, our ideas, in how we run our businesses, in how we get our images distributed and seen, in the business models that we assimilate, and in how we incorporate the activity that we love so much into our everyday lives.
We must be creative in how we use photography not just to provide us with money, with the means to live, but also to enhance our lives, make our lives more vital and exciting, increase our contribution and our sense of community. We are uniquely blessed to have a calling, a skill and an art that is so vital to the most important of all of mankind's activities: communication. Photography is a cornerstone of cross-cultural, cross-lingual and cross-gender communication. As photographers, we have a responsibility to create images that make it easier to communicate the values that we hold dearest, to push the envelope of society in the directions that we want to see it move. We can make a difference, and we can do it through our photographs.
The ideal situation finds us using our creativity to create compelling imagery that both provides us and our families with a comfortable living, and that is a true contribution to society by facilitating the communication of ideas and values that make the world a better place.
