Buzkashi

In this game of Buzkashi, taking place in the winter in Uzbekistan, competing teams of men on horseback attempt to get a decapitated goat into the "goal" at either end of the field. I was fortunate enough to happen upon this game with trusty camera in hand. They even let me wander around in the field, during the game, to take pictures...though the whole thing was a tad scary. And I thought American football was a brutal game.

Buzkashi, also known as kok-boru or kokpar, is a traditional sport that is played in Central Asia, including Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan. The game involves two teams of horsemen who compete to carry a goat or calf carcass across a field and deposit it in a designated goal area.

The origins of buzkashi are uncertain, but the game is believed to have been played for centuries, perhaps even millennia, in Central Asia. It is often considered a test of strength, agility, and horsemanship, as well as a demonstration of bravery and daring.

In buzkashi, the object of the game is to carry the carcass, which is often beheaded and skinned, across a field and deposit it in a goal area on the opposite side. The game is played on a field that can be several hundred meters long, with each team typically consisting of 10 to 15 horsemen.

At the start of the game, the carcass is placed in the center of the field, and the teams line up on opposite sides. When the game begins, the horsemen charge toward the carcass, attempting to grab it and carry it across the field.

Buzkashi can be a violent and dangerous game, with horsemen jostling for position and using their horses to block or tackle opponents. In some versions of the game, horsemen may even use whips or other weapons to strike opponents or their horses.

Despite its violent nature, buzkashi is deeply ingrained in the cultural traditions of Central Asia, and is often played during festivals and other important events. It is also considered an important cultural symbol, representing the courage and tenacity of the people of the region.

The game of buzkashi has also gained popularity outside of Central Asia, with tournaments and competitions held in countries such as the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
